The exclusive location for the Spring-Summer 2015 show of Perret Schaad at the Kronprinzenpalais’ garden was surrounded by typical Berlin-Mitte construction sites. The interesting tension between the scenic condition of the backyard and the industrial presence of the cranes was supported and intensified by abstract, coloured surfaces reminiscent of analogue collages. The guests were seated on the lawn, along two central runways to allow both closeup and total views of the collection. The spacious greenery offered an ideal platform for an outdoor fashion show whose main curation was based on the logistical layout of different materials: pathways, lawns, stairs, beds, façades. It was therefore only necessary to setup the event according to the existing principle of the place by arranging the audience parallel to the walks along the grass, since the collection was presented in loops around the central garden.
The architectural intervention on behalf of the design team was reduced to the installation of some freeform elements that were staged as a visual reactor to the rough actuality of the building sites around the adjacent Schinkel Pavillon on the south side of the venue. The enactment of the performance from the palace to the garden allowed for a twofold impression of the site, offering a panoramic overview up- and being confronted with the scheduled spectacle downstairs. For the realisation of the scene, a variation of the same concept has been exposed through different media:
1) the vertically positioned blobs were (pre-)assembled from white foamboards with a substructure in the back and painted in pastel-coloured tones, 2) the planar patterns from a recycled truck tarpaulin were laid out to be placed according to the overall logic of the show and hand-cut to create a similar shape, 3) the standees were built to function as the signage and meant to brand the identity of the designers as well as the idea itself. The event was accompanied by an acoustic setup to (de-)contextualise the show within the everyday performance of the active transformation in the heart of the city, appearing to act as the appropriate setting for the temporarily designed project.
